Structure and Performance of Packed Tower

Packed Tower Introduction：

1. Packed tower first appeared in the middle of the 19th century and was used for distillation operations in 1881, and was introduced to the oil refining industry in the early 20th century.

2. Packed tower is one of the most commonly used gas-liquid mass transfer equipment, which is widely used in distillation, absorption, desorption, stripping, extraction, chemical exchange, washing and heat exchange and other processes.

How the Packed Tower Works:

①The liquid is sprayed from the top of the tower to the filler through the liquid distributor, and flows down along the surface of the filler;

②The gas is sent in from the bottom of the tower, and after being distributed by the gas distribution device, it flows countercurrently with the liquid and continuously passes through the gap of the packing layer;

③ On the packing surface, the gas-liquid two-phase contact for mass transfer.

The Operating Characteristics of the Packed Tower:

①The packed tower is a differential contact gas-liquid mass transfer equipment, and the composition of the two phases changes continuously along the height of the tower;

②Under normal operating conditions, the gas phase is the continuous phase and the liquid phase is the dispersed phase.

Packing plays an important role in packed column operation. 

Mainly:

(1) The liquid wets the packing surface to increase the gas-liquid contact area;

(2) Prolonged the time of gas-liquid two-phase contact;

(3) The porosity of the filler layer not only promotes the uniform distribution of the airflow, but also promotes the turbulence of the gas phase. The overall mass transfer coefficient of the mass transfer process is increased
